Frequently asked questions
What is a GLP-1 medication?
GLP-1 receptor agonists are prescription medications that act on appetite and blood sugar pathways. Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) are the best known. Wegovy and Zepbound are FDA approved for chronic weight management in eligible adults. Ozempic and Mounjaro are approved for type 2 diabetes.
Who can prescribe a GLP-1 near me?
Any licensed provider who is allowed to prescribe in your state, including primary care doctors, endocrinologists, obesity medicine specialists and many weight loss clinics. Telehealth providers can also prescribe after an online evaluation. A provider decides whether a GLP-1 is appropriate after reviewing your history and medications.
Should I choose a local clinic or an online provider?
Both can work. A local clinic can add same-day vitals, labs and in-person injection teaching. Online providers are often more convenient and can serve areas without nearby clinics. Compare the full first-month price, who the prescriber is, and what is actually dispensed before you choose either.
What is the difference between brand and compounded GLP-1s?
Brand products such as Wegovy and Zepbound are FDA approved. Compounded versions are prepared by a pharmacy for an individual patient. The FDA says compounded drugs are not FDA approved and are not reviewed for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are marketed. Ask any clinic exactly what it dispenses and where it is sourced.
How much does a GLP-1 cost?
It depends on the product, the dose, your insurance and manufacturer programs, and prices change. See our clinic price research for what clinics publish on their own websites, and our semaglutide and Zepbound guides for the manufacturer figures with the date we reviewed them.
Does insurance or Medicaid cover GLP-1s for weight loss?
Coverage varies by plan and state, and many plans require prior authorization or exclude weight loss drugs. Check your plan documents. Our guides cover insurance denials, Medicare and Medicaid coverage.
How do I know a listing is reliable?
Listings come from each clinic's own website and are not endorsements. We show what a clinic publishes and link to sources where we can. Confirm availability, pricing and the prescriber directly with the clinic, and see our methodology page for how we build and correct listings.
